On Thursday the 29th September Sir Alan Sugar opened a new business incubation centre run by the charity London Youth Support Trust (LYST) in Mare St Hackney.
The centre has been built to help disadvantaged young people set up and run their own business. LYST now provides subsidised workspace and business advice to over 50 businesses in some of the most deprived areas of London. One of the charities funders, the London Development Agency (LDA): the Mayor's agency for business and jobs, describes LYST's work as a 'unique approach to provide workspace for the hard-to-reach-groups'. The Hackney centre has been converted to house a purpose-built centre, provided by Workspace Plc and the tenants include a range of different businesses including graphic, fashion and jewellery designers, dance teaching and card makers.
Sir Alan Sugar originally himself from Hackney will give the opening address, also speaking will be Lord Young of Graffham, a trustee of LYST, Lord Howard of Penrith Chairman of LYST and Harry Platt CEO of Workspace Group PLC.

LYST wins competitive tender to manage the enterprise building at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre. LYST's latest Centre will open operationally in December 2006, with the official opening in July 2007. We are very pleased at the prospect of working with the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, to deliver the enterprise programme from a new building in Tottenham Green, which is part of the arts, education and performance complex currently under construction. The building will include a purpose-built music and dance studio which will be managed by The Lab, a young business who won the Prince's Trust Business of the Year Award. RWD Magazine, a past LYST business, is also planning to move in to deliver 'RWD Media School' which will give young people the chance to learn about many aspects of media and benefit from relevant work experience.

LYST opens in Haringey

Following on the success of the LYST business incubation centres in Deptford and Hackney, our latest units are now up and running in Haringey. Located in the Bernie Grant Arts Centre complex in Tottenham, it is home to 19 young new entrepreneurs. The high cost of rented work space in the Capital means that starting your own business is particularly hard, so the opportunity to rent subsidised space is particularly welcome. Cliff Dobbs, who brings a wealth of experience from the Prince’s Trust where he provided business advice to disadvantaged youngsters starting-up on their own has been appointed manager. The units are nearly all now occupied. The range of young Haringey residents who are starting new businesses at this centre are very varied, reflecting the diverse skills and enthusiasm in the Borough. They include musicians, a carpenter, a provider of publishing training and a kilt maker. Our aim is that with Cliff’s advice and contacts and the wider support from the LYST network the rent subsidies will be reduced as these businesses grow. As these businessmen and women become firmly established, in due course, other young residents will take their place.

For more information, please call Cliff Dobbs on 020 8808 8400 or 07738 767 261 or email him at cliff@lyst.biz
