Dasmarca was set up in 2003 by knitwear designer Bidyut Das. Born in India in 1977, but a Londoner since 1990, Bidyut studied textile design at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art, and then went on to study women’s knitwear at Royal College of Art, London. The success of his RCA graduation show encouraged him to create is own label and carry on developing his signature style of chunky sculptural knitting.



Bidyut partly draws his inspiration from his childhood spent in the remote hilly province of Tripura (northern India). Surrounded by a community of weavers and knitters, he learned early on many textiles crafts. He also cherished the importance of colours which are central elements in his creations and were so prominent in his childhood. He also credits living in London a big influence on his designs: the city is bustling, cosmopolitan, fast and fun. For him, there are so many things, and so many people, to get inspired from in this metropolis if you look around a little carefully.



His diverse background has helped him to develop an innovative and unique knitwear style for Dasmarca. He has spent the last few years exploring knitwear using wool tops to create a line which is beyond the realm of conventional knitted textiles while at the same time maintaining the natural properties of wool. Experiments with shapes crafted from knitting needles as big as broom sticks and wool as thick as rope, later took shape into some of the most luxurious and unique scarves one could ever have. All Dasmarca creations are knitted and finished by hand so each piece is unique. They are made with the finest unspun Merino wool for that luxurious feel.
